Grunshaw Revealed as MP Candidate

November 20, 2007

Clive GrunshawFleetwood’s next MP could be local councillor Clive Grunshaw, it has been revealed.

Currently employed as a councillor for Lancashire County and Wyre Borough, he has been put forward as the Labour parliamentary candidate for the new Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency.

Coun Grunshaw, 46, lives at Mariners’ Quay, Fleetwood, and is married to Julie Grunshaw, also a Wyre councillor. They have a son Steven, 26, and daughters Jemma, 23, and Sophie 15.

Coun Grunshaw’s career covers a diverse range of roles, from dockworker to milkman. Since then, he has gained two degrees from Lancaster University and worked as personal assistant to Joan Humble, MP for Blackpool North and Fleetwood. He is also a member of Lancashire Police Authority.

Speaking about the announcement, Coun Grunshaw said it would be a tough fight: “Whatever happens it will be close between ourselves and the Conservatives. I am confident we can put forward policies that will convince people in the cosntituency.”

The election will pit him against Conservative Eric Ollerenshaw, Liberal Democrat Stuart Langhorn and the Green Party’s Gina Dowding.

I am pleased Clive Grunshaw has got the cancer treatment he was entitled to and wish him well. I was bemused by the circular I and many have got in Fleetwood where Mr Grunshaw praises the NHS. Funny this, as it is the only contact I have had with Labour for quite a long while., I wonder why ?
Before praising how well Labour have done we should remember the discriminatory postcode lottery which deprives many of the treatment for cancer they should obtain; and the actions of the ‘financial’ regulatory body NIHCE. On top of this condsider the creeping privatisation. Doctors are quite right to be concerned as they face infringement of their contracts and a growing target and regulatory culture and the imposition of Polyclinics (I am not a medical ‘Dr’ but lecture in health service managment). Little has been said about the virtual loss of NHS dentistry in Fleetwood. The response from Joan Humble when I wrote to her over 3 months ago was a reply saying ‘your concerns are receiving attention’..so far, nothing, no reply ! Well Labour will certainly get a reply at the next election and it will not be a positive one from me.
