Street drinkers to be targeted

February 25, 2008

Street DrinkersPolice across Wyre are set to be granted new powers to combat drinking in public.

A new Designated Public Places Order (DPPO) would target large areas of Fleetwood, Cleveleys and Poulton, allowing police to challenge anyone seen drinking on the streets within a specific area.

Drinkers refusing to obey requests to stop drinking could have any alcohol in open containers confiscated.
A further refusal to comply with the police might result in further action, including prosecution.

The scheme, which would apply to large areas of Pharos Ward including the entire north-east end of the town, has been designed to halt the rise of drinking in public and the nuisance behaviour that it often precipitates.

A DPPO would not automatically make the consumption of alcohol an offence; pubs and clubs within its boundaries would be exempt, as would events such as concerts.

However, it would enable police officers to intervene in situations where drinking might escalate into public disorder.

The plans, which can be viewed in detail on Wyre Council’s website, are currently awaiting approval from the borough’s licensing committee.

The committee has asked for the public’s feedback on the proposals, and for all comments for or against the plans to be submitted by the 31st of March.
